Customer

Bear Scotland North West, Hubert Kowalczyk – Structures Engineer

Project Remit

Replace 2nd exisitng type 5 joints with, new type 5 joint to the south and replace exisitng type 5 joint with mageba Polyflex joint.

The key to this project was the requirement to reduce the impact noise from vehicles on the north joint which local residents had complained about for a significant time.

The solution was to replace the north joint with Mageba Polyflex joint (first trial of this joint in Scotland) the main reason for this was, 1 – in order to trial this joint in Scotland, 2 – its reduced noise under impact of vehicles.

Products/Services to be provided

  • Installation of Traffic Management on A9
  • Set up site compound
  • Removal of 2no type 5 joints
  • Installation of new type 5 joint

Challenges that had to be overcome

Weather as with all bridge joints is a constant risk, this project required encapsulation during install, in order to keep heat in the air temperature at a constant.

Location, A9 Dunbeath, some 2.5 hours north of Inverness, planning of kit and resource was essential.

Local third party interest was high on the agenda due to nature of replacement and reason for changing the joints
